About The Ministry
The Ministry was set up in 1999 after the bifurcation of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment with the objective of providing more focused approach on the integrated socio-economic development of the Scheduled Tribes (STs).
The programmes and schemes of the Ministry are intended to support and supplement other Central Ministries, State Governments and partly of voluntary organizations, and to fill critical gaps in institutions and programmes taking into account the situation of STs through financial assistance. These schemes comprising economic, educational and social development through institution building are administered by the Ministry and implemented mainly through the State Governments/ Union Territory Administrations. The Ministry also supplements the efforts of other Ministries by way of various developmental interventions in critical sectors through specially tailored schemes.
About The National Fellowship Scheme [NFS] and Portal
This is a Central Sector Scheme of Ministry of Tribal Affairs and every year 750 fresh ST students are given fellowship for pursuing M.Phil and Ph. D. Courses. The applications are invited online on National Fellowship Portal. The detailed guidelines of scheme, Instruction manual, list of Universities and all information required for filling application is available here. The portal is integrated with Digital Locker and fetches documents already available there and also has facility to upload documents not available on digilocker. For online verification of credentials of applicants, the portal is Integrated with all Universities where students pursue fellowship courses. The portal is also linked with Canara Bank for keeping track research scholar payment details. The registered research scholars and Universities can upload their queries and grievance on portal. There is provision of sending alerts/notifications through individual or bulk SMS and Emails to fellows and Universities. For monitoring purposes, it is linked to the Dashboard.
